Character Class Creation

Hope this doesn't cause too much drama. Creating new classes has been the hot topic of late. This is the place where you can post your ideas and allow others to critique. Please no bashing of any kind and try to be open to suggestions. I've be thinking of race-specific classes and should be posting them soon.

Enjoy.

  1. I forgot to add that it would be best to include a background for the class to give us a better idea on what you're trying to create.

  2. Well I have lots of ideas of what classes/races I would love to create. The one I'm working on now is the dancer class. I see it as a mixture of a bard and a drunken master. Instead of singing and being drunk, you would use dance steps to perform the feats of amazement and increase your fighting prowess. You would use dances to inspire allies, and yourself, to do things they normally wouldn't be able to do. You could fill them with life saving energies or even pick up the tempo of a fight and make them easier/faster.

I'm also looking into the time tested Darkknight. Not the evil, I used to be good but now I eat all living things Darkknight, but the kind that has trained as an armored fighter and a magic user. I would have to look at the spell list to see which spells they would have, but for the most part they would be the spells that drain hp, blind, stun, boost, etc...There would be very few attack spells, like thunderbolt or something. Most of them would be support type spells. They would be allowed to wear armor and cast spells, much like clerics, and would be good at combat like fighters.

I think this will be an interesting "thread". I couldn't think of a better word than that lol.

  3. Alrite heres my crack at, its just my introduction/prologue to the class but meh i wanna know what you guys think 0_+!

The lore of the Dragon Liege has long been forgotten by many, those who remember those choosen few tell stories of a warrior who seemlessly combined the martial prowless of men with the ferocity of the kings of the sky. They are Knights who worship these ancient beasts by mimicking them in battle and these draconic warriors are revered for their prowless in combat. Their reverence for dragons as their majestic lords lead them to train their bodies to surpass the limit of normal men. Leaping and landing from great heights to build and refine their talents, legends speak of them as if they were dragons themselves; saying they could leap thousands of feet into the sky and crash upon their enemies like the dragons they so worship.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Thousands of feet? remember we are playing C&C and that's a D6 Dam for every 10 feet.

All three classees sound good, but remember everyone needs checks and balances.

If I cast spells and wear armor what can I NOT do?

If I dance and buff players, why not it only effect others? That a huge sacrifice

If I can fly like a dragon am I afraid of the water?

Think things through as a DM not a player.

    ReplyDelete
  5. The limits I have are in my post. Casting and wearing armor, but the spells that can be cast are limited to a certain few. There's only one dance that affects the dancer. All the rest only affect allies. I only put the basics behind the character, not what the abilities themselves... I'm sure they can't jump thousands of feet in the air. It was probably just for dramatic purposes.

But I get what you mean, there has to be limitations otherwise it would be unfair to have those classes.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Exactly.

Also, if you create a powerful class and have to fight it one day...hmmm?

  7. Let me take a crack at this.

    Dwarven Shieldmate

    Prerequisite: Dwarf

    Prime Attribute: Constitution
    Hit Die: D12
Weapons: Maces, Hammers, Axes and Crossbows
    Armor: Any
    Alignment: Any Lawful
Abilities: Shielded Combat, Furious Bash, Shieldmate's Blessing

I will give more info in the next post

    ReplyDelete
  8. Furious bash im sold...nuff sed lol...actually tell me what it does!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Bashes stuff furiously obviously! =P

    ReplyDelete
  10. Dwarven Shieldmates are extremely loyal and protective to those they call brother. On the battlefield they wield only shields and some two, serving as both weapon and protection.

Ablities(Must only be wielding one or two shields)

    Shielded Combat: at lvl 1 shields deal a d4 damage, lvl 5 - d6, lvl 10 - d8.

Shieldmate's Blessing: A Shieldmate always retains the AC bonus given by shields as wells as gets a +1 bonus to their AC every 3 levels starting at lvl 3. (This does not stack if you have two shields.)

Furious Bash: At lvl 4 a Shieldmate can charge and give up the AC bonus granted by his armor, shield, and Shieldmate's Blessing until the start of his next turn to deal double damage, lvl 8 - triple, lvl 12 - quadruple.

I'm thinking the they need the same xp as a fighter and the base attack of a pally. Also I think they should get a bonus to unarmed combat, Im thinking like a d6. Let me know what you think, but don't be too harsh I'm sensitive.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think it sounds pretty good. I love their loyalty and I love that it is limited to the dwarf race.

I have a question, though, is there any limit to what kind of shield they can use? For instance, can it be made of any material? Can it have things like spikes to enhance it and make it able to pierce armor and rip flesh?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Of course. All customizations are up to the PC(and the DM). If you want spikes or blades on your shield, I dont see a problem with that. Since your shield is your weapon I was kinda expecting you to enhance it.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  13. "...give up the AC bonus granted by his armor, shield, and Shieldmate's Blessing..."

I don't think the giving up armor bonus is even possible. Maybe instead they give up their dex modifier. Remember the AC from armor isn't just missing but it also takes into account how hard it is to pierce.

"...+1 bonus to their AC every 3 levels starting at lvl 3. (This does not stack if you have two shields.)..."
I don't understand this statement. Do you mean that you don't get the +1AC every three lvls if you have two shields?

Also, what's the benefit to having 2 shields? Does the armor from them stack? I also like the statement, "...is there any limit to what kind of shield they can use?..." Can you use two pavis or do they have to be small shields or can you use two large shields, or can one be large and the other has to be small?

Just some questions I know that will come up later.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1) you're right instead of armor you lose dex.

2)Every 3 levels you get +1 added to your shield bonus but it only counts once even if you have two shields.

    3) I would say if you have two shields the bonus would stack and maybe somebody just wants to be cool with two shields. I dont have the book in front of me so I dont know the different shield but it would definitely depend on the size of the shield. I will get back to you on that.

    Thanks for the input.

    ReplyDelete
  15. "...2)Every 3 levels you get +1 added to your shield bonus but it only counts once even if you have two shields..." Makes sense to me now. Sounds like an interesting class.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was thinking of some craziness but I tried to keep it simple. I think it's balance enough to fit with the base class but idk.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Imma come up with one and call it "Urkel of Light".

    hehehehehe

    ReplyDelete
  18. I did't realize we had a comedian amongst us.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thank you! Thank you! I am here all week. Try the veal.

    ReplyDelete
  20. One comment.

The damage multiplier is ridiculous, X4 dam and you only loose your dex bonus? I get the jist that it is a defensive class. Boot the whole dam multiplier and the class will be simple and balanced.

    ReplyDelete
  21. To comment on the halfDragon class.

How and why is there a half dragon in existence?

If you were an almost immortal being would you spread your seed with Kobolds? Dragons are the superior race and reptiles and we are mammals.

I personally have about three really cool ideas on how this could exist. The problem is how are you going to be a dragon and not be cheese?

Remember to keep things simple. Example Str mod + 2 chr mod - 3 because they retain much of their lizard features. They would probably get bad reaction adjustments. Night vision.

Background : Why?? what purpose do they serve?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I feel you Leetin but you dont just lose your dex, you lose you dex, shield bonus and the bonus from Shieldmate's blessing. The only bonus you keep is from your armor.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, I was going to say the same thing as shoo so...
You also don't get the x4 dmg until higher lvl and it is restricted to only shields.

As for the half dragon, I'll have to comment on it another time. It's almost 2AM and my eyes hurt from the black background.

    ReplyDelete
  24. About your question leetin i was debating a couple of origins myself and that indeed is the hardest part. I definitely want there reason for being to have substance and not just seem cheesy.
One idea i have been kicking around is that they are worshippers of good to nuetral dragon dieties (like Bahamut or Lendys) who threw their devout service have been granted dragonlike abilities, but i dont want them to be too much like paladins, no healing abilities ofcourse and im thinking the alignment doesnt have to be so strict...thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  25. How about any non-evil alignment. Also the Shieldmate, is it cool? Im gonna try to make it easier to read and make a few changes.

    ReplyDelete
  26. yea any non-evil alignment sounds cool actually, what im trying to steer it away from is giving it two many racial bonuses, thats why o was leaning towards limiting it to elf, it fits in aswell, because I believe it would takes hundreds of years of patronage for a dragon to heed your prayers, or an act of great loyalty by you on their behalf...

    ReplyDelete
  27. The shield basher is is simple an cool, but that damage modifier is out of control. Come on 12th level is not that high. I was thinking a X3 bonus at 15 might be high.

So every time I hit this is my dam at 12th.

    D8 shield
    +4 magical shield bonus
    +2 Str

    So we get a d8 + 6 X4
minimum damage that you can do is 28.
Maximum damage that you can do is 56.
So on average you are doing around 40 points of damage a round.
Now imagine if you roll a 20 at X3 and you roll max.

You can potentially do 168 damage.

    Need I say more??

    ReplyDelete
  28. Greed, So you have an elf that worships a dragon god. As a gift it grants you some dragon-like abilities hence making it a class but not a holy warrior?

You suggested jump, so let say you are granted the ability to fly/jump and you decide 10ft is max.

Thinking that this is a really hard class. Why not make it hard to qualify, so only the best are chosen?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I hear you leetin...but by hard what do you mean, attribute prerequisites? That kinda goes against c&c whole way of doings things...examples would help...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree that 12th lvl isn't that high, but you have to look at all the classes in C&C. All their abilities stop at lvl 12. We are trying to make classes that fit into C&C and what they have already. Besides that, by the time you get a +4 shield and doing x4 dmg, the monsters are going to have hp in the hundreds, so doing 50+dmg isn't going to be that much. Also, your AC would drop and you would be easier to hit and I'm sure that taking 50+dmg after that charge means you probably wouldn't do it again for a while. Besides, it's not like you can do it every round when fighting one opponent, you have to charge to do it. In order to charge you have to move at least 10ft and you have to go in a straight line. So once you charge the creature you're not going to be able to charge again unless you run away from it, not have it chase you and then on the next round you can charge it again. Also, since you have to charge it you not only would loose the AC from dex and shield and shield bonus, you also gain a -2 to AC for the rest of the round because you charged. So even if you were wearing full plate and you did this attack, your AC would only be 16 which at lvl 12 would not be hard to hit. I'm also thinking you think that the shield bonus they get is for attacking/dmg. It's not, it's for their AC and they loose that bonus when they do that attack. Just some food for thought.

As for greed, Why would a class give you racial bonuses? You can give abilities that work like weaker versions of a dragon. For instance dragon breath. An actual dragon can use it's breath about 1d4 rounds. The class might give you dragon breath, but you can only use it once a day, have it go up with lvls to maybe 3 times a day and even then you would have to wait 1d6 rounds before you can use it in repetition (Just an example). Or another example could be that: a dragon has spell resistance. The class could grant spell resistance of lower quality. For example lets say a dragon has a spell resistance of 30 all it's life. Maybe the class could grant a spell resistance of 1/2 class lvl +10. This would grant a spell resistance of 20 at lvl 20. Even then, you might not get it until lvl 5 or so. Just remember that a class should never give bonuses to stats.

  31. Magi

Arcane Spellcasters able to call on magical energies and spells without the use of a spell book.

    Limited Spells per day
    Inate psychic ability(minor)
An affinity to minor magical items and places

    ReplyDelete
  32. Grom:
An optional rule exists that provide spell points like in Rifts. This way you can cast what ever spells you want and never memorize. Also I think Psionics works that way in C&C

    ReplyDelete
  33. You should mixed that with the blood mage I was taking about. Just an idea.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Just realized that different shields do different damage. Would this count toward the class's shield or would the special ability supersede?

I was thinking last night and realized I had fighter doing 40-50 dam a round at 12th. I also had magic items that helped.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I didnt know different shields do different damage I thought they all did a d3. I going to have to think about that but in the mean time imma put the class up again with some slight tweaks

    ReplyDelete
  36. Dwarven Shieldmate

    Prerequisite: Dwarf
    Prime Attribute: Constitution
    Hit Die: D12
Weapons: Maces, Hammers, Axes and Crossbows
    Armor: Any
    Alignment: Any Lawful
Abilities: Brawler, Shielded Combat, Shieldmate's Blessing, Furious Bash

Abilities(Must only be wielding one or two shields except for Brawler)

Brawler: Unarmed damage for a Shieldmate is a d6 instead of a d3.

    Shielded Combat: At lvl 1 shields deal a d4 damage, lvl 5 - d6, lvl 10 - d8.

Shieldmate's Blessing: A Shieldmate always retains the AC bonus given by shields as wells as gets a +1 shield bonus to their AC every 3 levels starting at lvl 3. (This does not stack if you have two shields.)

Furious Bash: At lvl 4 a Shieldmate can charge and give up the AC bonus granted by his dexterity, shield, and Shieldmate's Blessing until the start of his next turn to deal double damage, lvl 8 - triple.

    Base Attack: Paladin
    XP: Fighter

    ReplyDelete
  37. I felt Leetin was right, the quad damage is a little too much and this class isn't meant to deal that much of damage.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Maybe the Magi will us his HP as Psionic Points for his spells.

However the class will not be psionic in nature one of their abilities will be a bonus to reactions with magical creatures due to their inate magical nature(its a psychic manifestation) and the other will be detecting the direction of magic as a 'bump' of intuition(Also psychic).

At level 12, a magi can drain charges out of magical items to power spells as if he had used his own life's blood.

    ReplyDelete
  39. A lot better Shoo-Nuff.

So my magi has 12 hp at 4th lvl, he in turn has 12 spell points. To cast a first lvl spell cost 2 points, cause a zero is 1?? In turn a 9th will cost 10 points. If it only costs 10 a 18th lvl mage with no con might have around 40-50 hp? In another thought its 25 magic missiles? Fuck who needs a death spell.

I like the 12th lvl ability.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Magi

    Prime Attribute: Charisma
    Hit Die: D6
Weapons: Club, dart, crossbow, spear, dagger
    Armor: None
    Alignment: Any Chaotic
Abilities: Spells, Soul Casting, Perceive Magic, Strange Beast Affinity, Soul Feeding

    ReplyDelete
  41. Half-Dragon

    Str: +5
    Con: +5
    Cha: -3

Size: Medium, however considered large when calculating spell effects and other size specific situations such as avoiding being pinned by a Dragon Liege.

Animosity: True Dragons hate what half-dragons represent and hunt them down whenever possible.

Breath Weapon: Half-Dragons have a breath weapon similar to their much larger progenators. A half-dragon's breath deals damage equal to 1d4/number of hd. This can only be done once a day.

Resistance to charm, sleep, and confusion: +2 to saves concerning charm, sleep and confusion spells.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Can't wait to see what this Magi is about!

I feel +5 to a stat is to powerful but +5 to two stat is just seems ridiculous. I would say +2 maybe +3 at the most. I know its a half-dragon but DAMN!!!

  43. As requested by Legendary, THE HOLY SWORDSMAN.

    Prime Attribute: Strength
    Hit Die: D10
    Alignment: Lawful Good
    Weapons: Swords
    Armor: Any except shields

Abilities: Sword Master, Sword Techniques, Detect Evil, Martyr

Sword Master(lvl 1): A Holy Swordsman add his Wis to his base attack when attacking with a sword.

    Sword Techniques:

Blinding Slash(lvl 2): The target must successfully roll a Con save or be dazed for 1 round.(Blue) (Dazed - The target is unable to act on his turn, loses Dex bonus but not completely helpless)

Rejuvenating Blow(lvl 4): The Holy Swordsman heals for his lvl + Wis.(White)

    Not done will update later.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Half-Dragon Holy Swordsman! Almost a reality...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Half-Dragon

    Str: +3
    Con: +3
    Cha: -3

    Is this more balanced?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I would say for half dragon
    Str + 2
    Con +2
    Cha -2
    Dex -2
have to keep the equal attribute formula of CNC, 3 is too heavy a number to add or subtract from a stat, and as a stat goes up another goes down by that same respect, so two for one doesnt seem fair. Losing the dex makes sense because they are larger size catagory as you stated above.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Here's my Dragon Liege class

    Prime attribute: Dex
    Hit die:10
    Base: Knight
    Alignment:any
    Race: Elf
    Weapon: Polearms
    Armor: Any

Draconic Lore (wis): Through centuries of loyal service and worship a Dragon Liege has expert knowledge of subjects Draconic in nature. They attain Draconic as a bonus language, and by utilizing this knowledge they are able to identify and know each type of dragon by arch-type characteristics.

Draconic Blessing: Dragon Lieges upon their acceptance by their Draconic gods are blessed with a type of dragon sharing in their alignment that they must emulate. For the rest of their lives they must embody this dragon, it's way of life becomes the tenants for which the Liege follows with strict adherence and aspires to attain.

Polearm Affinity: To a Dragon Liege the Spear is the embodiment of the dragons claw, tooth and tail. To better commune with their draconic dieties Dragon Lieges feel that these are the only weapon they need use. Training for centuries to master its secrets and become masters of the spear. Dragon Lieges are expert in pole arm weaponry and suffer no penalty when using them in close-quarters combat.

Armored Ascension: A Dragon Liege at 4th Level suffers no armor check penalties to class skills from wearing medium metalic armor, this ability extends to heavy armor at 9th Level. Furthermore a Dragon Liege that posesses dragonhide armor of an opposite aligned dragon gains a +2 to all class abilities and never suffers from armor penalties to his checks regardless if he is ready to bear the weight or not.

Climb (dex): This ability allows a Liege to climb up, a natural slope or inverted incline, when doing so the Dragon Liege moves at one half the characters normal speed. A failed scale check means that the character makes no progress. A check that fails by 5 or more means that the Dragon Liege falls from the currently attain height and must suffer falling damage. Nothing can be carried in the Lieges hands while climbing.
*This ability is affected if armor the Liege is not proficient with using is worn.

    Aerial Tactics-
Jump(Dex): A Dragon Liege jumping ability is extraordinary such that they are able to make great leaps that others would find difficult.
*This ability is affected if armor the Liege is not proficient with using is worn.

Experienced Diver: At 3rd Level, a falling Dragon Liege takes damage from a fall as if the fall, were 10ft shorter than it actually is. This ability increase to 20 ft at 7th level and increases to 30 ft at 12th. A Dragon Liege must have control of his her descent, and land in the appropriate stance in order to reduce fall damage.
*This ability is affected if armor the Liege is not proficient with using is worn.

Aerial Dive (Crush) Attack: The trademark of the Dragon Liege class, a falling/diving Dragon Liege can use the Aerial Dive attack to strike down on his foes from the sky with ferocious force. The Dragon Liege does an extra d6 on their attack for 10ft of vertical height attained during their dive.

(Str)Pin-At 8th Level, following a successful Aerial dive attack the Dragon Liege can attempt to pin the target of the aerial dive. The Liege must make a successful strength check + 4 if he is larger than the target, and -4 if he is smaller. The opponent gets a dex/str (which ever is prime) save minus the dragon Lieges Level, pinned targets suffer a -2 to AC against all creatures except the Dragon Liege. If the opponent saves, they successfully avoids being pinned, and moves out of the space and Dragon Liege now occupies it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Half-Dragon

    Str: +3
    Con: +3
    Cha: -6

I disagree with your argument about Half-Dragon. The basic races are in the book as basic because they are common and not special but a Half-Dragon is more than that. They would be extraordinary and I wanted the stat bonus to reflect that.

I do agree about the bonses and penaltis being even. Its an oversight I've attempted to correct.
