  1. I'll get the ball rolling with our first term Background, Im sure you all remember this one hehe...
BACKGROUND- {BAh-ACK GREW-OUUND}is a brief summary of the characters life or mini-autobiography that gives the DM as well as the PC an idea of who the character is, where he comes from, his family if he/she has any, who he loves, e.t.c. A background should be a tenant to the PC of how he wants to role play his character and a PC should be able to go back to his background should he ever forget who his character is and remember who the hell he is role playing. A background is not meant to, I repeat is not meant to assist the PC in aquiring a bunch of skills or abilities that the Pc just wants to have and is not willing to role play aquiring in other words, cheese-off. Good backgrounds do this on their own and stand on their own two feet to a point were the DM says you should have this because it makes sense according to your background. EX. A PC's character who is a ranger and wrote in his background that he grew up in the desert for most of his life, and then later the forest might be able be able to ask the DM upon character creation for arid environment survival. If the DM can see the connection he or she might grant it, nothing is for certain and if the DM is not a total dick he will understand what you are talking about. Again backgrounds are not meant to assist your character in cheesing off but give your character a good foundation for role playing and that my friends is reward in itself. Sentence: Supersttious wrote an excellent background for her character Katrina that gave a great foundation for her role playing to build on, and flush out her character.
    Let the debating begin...

  2. Background: The noise that plays in the back of my mind as I'm thinking in character. What would Greymane do... hmmmm, he does love horses more than men. I save the horses in the burning barn while I let the party worry about the people in the house. It was written in my BAh-ACK GREW-OUUND and it was playing in the back of my mind. Save the horses.

  3. LOL. I agree with you Greed. Your background is suppose to explain how you fit into this world, and to give you and the DM a guideline on how you should play your character. I also agree that if your background is unique and it seem you've put effort into it the DM should take notice and most of the time you're reward for it instead of just writing your father gave you a +1 longsword.

  4. Baa-Humbug who needs this hunky dory new fanged terminology...what did this wipper snapper call it..hmmm ...lets see.. oh my feet hurt....snoore.

Oh were was I. One thing to remember is that you are a P.C, so by definition you are not farmer bob. You can start a the farmer but you will eventually become a hero.

Get creative with your history, if you put strife in your history the DM can roll with it. For Example: We played an adventure called Against the giants and one of us decided that his mortal enemy was a band of giants that wore plate mail. Now everyone can imagine, we fought tons of giants who wore armor.

  5. Backgrounds are as important if not more important than the numbers on your character sheet. It represents who your character is. It defines the difference between the chaacter and the other voices vying for your attention. Styles of backgrounds may vary but the concept is the same.

  7. Well the only thing I would find unfair is if a background is being judge to heavily on the writers creativity. Some of us aren't excellent writers or storytellers and might not have the best imagination so I think what should be judged is the effort put into the background. It might not be the coolest background but just as long as the effort is there I think that's good enough.

  8. Once a background is chosen stick to your guns. The player has already created a personality.
